The development team implemented a system that allowed "Basler Zeitung" to reuse the text and image content collected in their publishing system (Quark Express) to produce the printed newspaper by means of a fully automated process. Consequently, BaZ introduced their rather complex web site without the need of any additional staff.
Each journalist or editor decides which texts and pictures should appear on the web site and marks them accordingly when delivering the text. The system also allows many parameters like placing option etc. to be edited using a standard web browser. The publishing system then collects the text and picture data from the various resources, creates links between articles, stores the articles of the previous issue in the archive and allows the responsible editor to check the site in a preview. He can then resolve any problems which have been found in the consistency check, do some last minute changes and the publish the result on the companies web server automatically.
